THEME:
SUBALTERN CONCEPT IN INDIAN WRITING IN ENGLISH
The genesis of subaltern emerged as a critical concept of extreme importance in post-colonial theory and literature. The subaltern studies itself is a discipline. It is also interdisciplinary subject. For the first time the term ‘Subaltern’ is used by Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. In Latin ‘sub’ means ‘under’ and ‘alter’ means ‘other’. So literally it denotes to any person or group of persons belonging to inferior rank. They may also belong to any class, gender, sex, ethnicity and religion. The subaltern refers to any specific marginalized situation in any given cultural or social context. Subaltern consciousness is one of the characteristics of subalternity. Antonio Gramsci emphasized the significance of the word in terms of class, gender, caste, marginalization, race and culture of the society whereas Gayatri Spivak used the term for the colonised and the oppressed people, working class, gender and the women whose voice has been muted. Ranjith Guha also denoted that the term expresses about class, caste, age and gender. The concept of subaltern studies prominence is derived from Marxism and Post-structuralism. One of the most recent sub divisions of post-colonial theory is the subaltern studies.
The subaltern themes are reflected in Indian Writing in English. It is expected from the paper presenters, Academicians and the scholars to explore subaltern themes as reflected in Post-colonial Indo-Anglian fiction in the writings of Mulk Raj Anand, Anita Desai, Bhabhani Bhattacharya, Nayantara Sehgal, Kushwanth Singh, V.S.Naipul, Salman Rushdie, Shashi Deshpande , Kamal Das, Bharti Mukharjee, Arundati Roy, Jumpa Lahiri, Kiran Desai, Amitav Ghosh, Mahasweta Devi, Rohinton Mistry, Chetan Bhagat, Amish Tripathi and other contemporary writers.
