Three days National Seminar on “Social Justice in the Era of Globalization:
Invoking Gandhian Ideals”
(From 25th November to 27th November 2009)

Economic discontent and social injustice have been in the rise even in the era of globalization. The process of economic globalization, “widens the gap between poor and rich resulting in social upheavals” to quote World Bank report. In this context, it is worthwhile to recollect what Nobel-laureate, Prof. Amartya Sen has articulated in his recent works. He says: “social justice for the common man is yet in the distant dream and therefore ‘Nyaya’– the justice based on the real ground or the immediate justice to the common man is more relevant than the ‘Niti’ – the justice through court or state in the present economic context”. India is the largest democratic country, wherein majority of the people are socially and economically deprived. This is also the case with many of the African, Latin American and Asian countries. In the face of uneven benefits of liberalization and globalization, benefiting only a few, poverty and violence have been increasing in the world, more particularly in developing countries.

A recent report published by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) of India also underlines the fact that people from socially deprived community should be supported and they should be put on par with other groups so as to enjoy the social, economic and political benefits equitably. Against this brief background, the Centre for Gandhian Studies proposes to conduct a three-day national seminar on “Social Justice in the Era of Globalization: Invoking Gandhian Ideals” from 25th November to 27th November 2009

Objective: The seminar is proposed with an objective of disseminating the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi among students and faculty members. Gandhian approaches for attaining social and economic justice will be highlighted. The theme of the seminar will cover the issues relating to: Society, Politics, Economics, Culture, Peace and Development encompassing regional, national and international fields.

Note: Lodging and boarding will be arranged by the organizers of the seminar and TA will not be provided.
