85th Indian Philosophical Congress, Department of Philosophy,
Gauhati University, Guwahati 781014 (Assam)
October 26 to 29,2010
Theme:PHILOSOPHY FOR SOCIAL INTEGRATION
Philosophy has been thought in the common parlance as an idle subject having nothing or little to do with the real world of the ordinary man. The everyday world has been confronting with a host of social, cultural, political, economic, environmental, and many other crises centering human existence and sustenance. Though these problems are taken care of by different disciplines separately, it is worth pointing out that the root of all such crises lies in the lack of a proper approach toward society, culture, politics, environment and so forth, that is in the broad sense toward humanity at large. It is the humanity and human quality that is in stake; and that begets all that we do not want.
It is the human welfare that is the goal of all social sciences.
Philosophy had never turned a blind eye to these burning issues of mankind. Indeed it is the way one looks at humanity that determines one’s philosophy. The celebrity German Philosopher Immanuel Kant gave the categorical imperative to treat humanity whether one’s own or that of others always as an end and never as a means. Such an approach can only generate inter-faith, inter-cultural tolerance, respect for others, sense of fellow-feeling, and the much talked about ‘universal brotherhood’.
Let this 85th session of Indian Philosophical Congress carry this message and let philosophy be consciously applied for regenerating human relations of love, compassion, fellow feeling.
Let philosophy work for social integration.
