National Conference on “Honour Killing: The Mind
&
The Mind Set: Challenges
& Remedies”
Dear Sir/Madam
It gives me an immense pleasure to inform you that the Department of Political
Science, Nehru Studies Centre in collaboration with National Commission for Women,
New Delhi are organizing a National Conference on the theme “Honour Killing: The
Mind &The Mind Set: Challenges
& Remedies” on 12th-13th Jan, 2013 in the Senate
Hall, University of Rajasthan, [aipur,
Honour killings have existed in all societies and in all times. It is the most blatant
dishonour to humanity. Killing women in the name of the honour of the family,
community, caste, religion or race puts the identity of the collectively above the identity
of the individual. This creates the ground for all sorts of violation of the human rights of
women. Thousands of cases of honour killings have been reported from all over the
world. These are atrocious and inhuman judgments. It is a clear violation of Human
Rights and Human dignity. If every culture starts practicing its own way of delivering
justice then it is going to be total chaos in the society. The whole focus of civilizing and
organizing the society for the betterment of human development becomes meaningless.
Violence and threatening of couples has been reported both from rural and
urban areas and from almost all sections of contemporary Indian society. The reaction
to the inter-caste marriages is much stronger and violent when the girl marries a Dalit
or in a lower caste than her own. Killing a person because she/he married a person of
her
Ihis choice is no way of delivering justice. There is an urgent need to understand the
severity of the issue of the autocratic role of Khap Panchayats. Are we going to allow
these Khap Panchayats to do what they wish under the veil of protecting our culture
and traditions? Or are we going to make sure that nobody and nothing is above our
constitution and our legal system? The second option needs to be answered with great
support as these things should not be tolerated in a democratic society at any cost. The
issue is also important because the main root of the problem of caste identity needs to
be dealt with properly so that it doesn’t harm the fabric of our nation with such
inhuman acts of honour killings which were justified in a savage society but not in the
present civilized democratic society.
The national conference on the subject is proposed with the objective of
deliberating and exploring the conceptual issues and real life situations which would
help in finding the ways to come out of the grim situation and the circumstances our
society is facing. The dictatorial attitude of Khap Panchayats specially in name of
honour killings need to be studied objectively to draw definite conclusions as regards to
the functioning of Khap Panchayats. The conference would work for understanding the
mind and mind set of the perpetrators who have approached the Parliament,
demanding amendments in the personal laws. The need of the hour is to understand the
fast growing menace and search for ways and means to put an end to this inhuman
practice.
