National Institute of Technology Silchar with generous support form the MHRD is organizing a Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) course titled: Religion, Ideologies & Nationalism in South Asia, during 23-28 October 2017.

The importance of religion in the public sphere is exceedingly being felt. Nations as ‘imagined communities’ speak to the profound need for both legitimacy and belonging(ness), often articulated through one’s religious vis-a-vis ethnic identities in the modern world. This course will address this issue by focusing on the relationships between religion, geo-politics and the emergence and proliferation of nationalism. To illustrate the complexity and richness of the topic, this course will touch upon a diverse range of themes – proselytization, Orientalism, nationalist historiography, cartography, scientization, secularism, the Partition, multiculturalism, caste, gender, postcoloniality etc. — in the context of South Asia.

Ishita Banerjee-Dube, Professor of History at the Center for Asian and African Studies, El Colegio de México, will teach the course. We look forward to your participation. Complete course details including registration information and the course outline is available here: https://goo.gl/93SDvU. Please share this call with relevant individuals, organizations, and networks. Thanks.
