CONCEPT NOTE
The Preamble to the Constitution of UNESCO declares that since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed. On the same line Gndhiji said that to reach peace, teach peace. Now a day the world is gripped by the conflict, violence and war on Terrorism. No region is free from these problems. We have seen that heinous acts are often committed under the veil of public mandates when in fact they are the wishes of the few people in power, be they economic, political, military, or even religious leaders. To have a peaceful global social order, it is desired that there must be tolerance to diversities and respect to human rights among all people and at all places. Thus, there is an urgent need for a culture of peace globally. The most significant way of promoting a global culture of peace is through education in the educational institutions; starting from primary level to University. Peace education needs to be accepted in all parts of the world, in all societies and countries in creating culture of peace.
Peace education should encompass values such as non-discrimination, equality, justice, non- violence, tolerance and respect for human rights and dignity. Quality education based on peace approach implies that it must prevail in all learning environments. The role of teachers in maintaining peace environment in the educational institutions and nurturing values of peace and to get the values reflected in real life among the students is vital. The teachers must be empowered with right kind of knowledge, attitude and skills to discharge this task in very effective manner. Hence, educating the teachers, through pre-service and in-service trainings is the need of the hour. This will be possible only when the teacher training institutions and the teacher educators are empowered. In nut shell, the teachers, would be teachers and the teacher educators are required to be empowered with right kind of knowledge, understanding, attitude, and skills for not only inculcation of peace related values but also to make the students to follow in their lives in true spirit. To fulfil this objective, it is essential to design curriculum for teacher trainees and plan the pedagogical approach to be followed for effective transaction of peace related values at different levels of education.
India is characterised by its diversity. The North-Eastern part of India reflects much heterogeneity in terms ethnicity, religion, language and dialect, and socio-cultural practices. Many a times, conflicts, insurgency activities, anti-national activities etc are being reported from this part of our country, which concerns all conscious citizens of our country. The feeling of nationalism and human society can be possible when one has the values of peace, respects human rights and tolerates the diversity.
In this context the Department of Education, Mizoram University proposes to organize a Two- Day International Conference on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Tolerance. The conference shall deliberate on the above issues in the national and international context. Teacher educators, teachers, Academicians, Scholars, NGOs, Administrators and Policy Makers will be invited in the deliberations to critically reflect on the theme and open up different perspectives. The conference, hopefully, shall come out with suggestions to government of India for taking suitable measures.
