Call for Papers

Lokāyata: Journal of Positive Philosophy (ISSN 2249-8389)

Respected Faculty/Scholar,

I would like to invite all academicians from all disciplines to contribute research papers and articles for our journal. Lokāyata: Journal of Positive Philosophy (ISSN 2249-8389) is a bi-annual interdisciplinary journal of the Center for Positive Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies (CPPIS). The name Lokāyata can be traced to Kautilya’s Arthashastra, which refers to three ānvīkikīs (logical philosophies), Yoga, Samkhya and Lokāyata. Lokāyata here still refers to logical debate (disputatio, “criticism”) in general and not to a materialist doctrine in particular. The objectives of the journal are to encourage new thinking on concepts and theoretical frameworks in the disciplines of humanities and social sciences to disseminate such new ideas and research papers (with strong emphasis on modern implications of philosophy) which have broad relevance in society in general and man’s life in particular. The Centre will publish two issues of the journal every year. Each regular issue of the journal will contain full-length papers, discussions and comments, book reviews, information on new books and other relevant academic information. Each issue will contain about 100 Pages.

Theme: Philosophy, Education and Human Rights

Last date for paper submission: 31stAugust, 2012

National   Workshop

ON

Use of Quantitative Methods in Political Science

Organized by Department of Political Science, Dyal Singh College Karnal Haryana India

In Collaboration with Lokniti CSDS New Delhi

( Sponsored by ICSSR and UGC New Delhi )

Modern political science focuses primarily on the study of human behaviour. Despite complexities, this discipline has progressed by adopting a variety of methods and theoretical approaches to understand politics.  After  Second  World War,   the behavioural revolution in political science concentrated on a  systematic  and rigorous scientific study of individual and group behaviour.  Special emphasis was laid on the  interpretation of relationships  among various organs of the government instead of studying  their formal structures.  In the late 1970s political scientists  began  to construct theories by using methodologies employed  by  other disciplines of social sciences. This shift of focus of analysis of political behaviour continued despite the fact that the impact of behaviouralism was  waning  after a decade of its inception.  Due to rise of interdisciplinarity in contemporary  research in Humanities,  political science  also moved  towards a working /new relationship with the major disciplines of social sciences.

Interestingly political scientists have used  scientific methods  to create an intellectual discipline involving quantitative research methods followed by empirical investigation and scientific verification. Over the last decade or so, in political sciences there has been a marked  emphasis on the use of quantitative methods. This shift aims at consolidating  scientific knowledge/study of politics and provide explanations for empirical outcomes. Taking into account these new innovations of methodology
in the discipline, the Department of Political Science,  Dyal Singh College, Karnal, Haryana,  propose to organize a  workshop on the ‘Use of Quantitative Methods in Political Science  from  24 May-2012
to 2 June- 2012.

Essential requirements for this workshop.

  1. Teachers          of Political Science in colleges and Universities who are working on          empirical subjects.
  2. Research          students of Political Science who are working on empirical themes.
  3. Any          other person (including those from outside Political Science) who are          interested in making sense of politics by analyzing quantitative data.
  4. Knowledge          of Computer is must.
Interested candidates are required to submit their CV with a     statement of Research Interest  in     about 500 words to political.science.dsc@gmail.com. The last date for     receiving the application is Saturday 31st March,2012..     Keeping in view the relevance of research interest with the theme of the     workshop only shortlisted candidates will be invited for the same. Please     note that this is a full time residential training course and candidates     admitted to the workshop are expected to stay at the Institute and engage     in full time work on all days during this period.

The organizers will provide moderate accommodation and food for all the participants for the entire duration of the workshop as well as the participants will be reimbursed their travel expenses from their place of residence to Karnal and back  (Train AC III or its equivalent ).

Looking forward to your cooperation

International Conference on ‘Law and Democracy in India’

The everyday life of citizens in postcolonial states has been accompanied by the increasing reach and depth of law and legislation. Indeed, the law and legislation have been central to the experience of transition of ‘old societies’ into ‘new states’. In most cases, the movements for decolonization have found their utmost expression in the type of legal architecture that these societies have given to themselves. In no way has law been a matter of mere historical inheritance, and, it has been made to articulate the changing spirit of the life of a postcolonial nation. Indeed, law has been conceived and used as the most potent instrument for social change. The number and intensity of contestations around the (non)desirability of a particular piece of legislation in our times bear ample testimony to both its power of democratic mobilization and as an axis of conflicting visions of democratic nation-building. Very often, these visions collide as they encapsulate large ideas of democracy, pluralism, social justice, and equality and minority rights. In a way, a peep into these contestations opens up large swathe of themes and issues that inform and animate the idea and practice of democracy. An understanding of our democratic imagination calls for the unpacking of the intimate linkages that law and democracy in India have been characterized with.
